Week 4-6Problem Solving

This is an outline of the information that will be posted in weeks 4 through 6 in the problem solving course for EDLD 5318.

Objectives Week 4

  1. The student will be able to construct procedures that put possible solutions in place to problems that present themselves.
  2. The student will be able to analyze applied solutions.
  3. The student will be able to devise a solution to laboratory problems.
  4. The student will be able to practice the steps of problem solving.

  1. Check it
    1. Applying solutions to correct problems
      1. Sometimes you have to take one step at a time and work the problem to see if that is the correct solution.

You will note that the outline is smaller this week. There will be an increase in the amount of problem solving situations to do this week. This will allow you the opportunity to put what you have learned into practice.

Objectives Week 5

  1. The student will be able to determine whether information is needed or not to solve problems.
  2. The student will be able to consider different solutions for problem serving.
  3. The student will be able to assess which solutions should not be considered.

  1. Identifying things that get in the way of solving a problem
  2. Functional fixedness- cannot think outside the box, only thinking there is one way for a solution
  3. Misleading information- recognizing pieces that are not part of the problem
  4. Assumptions- do not assume anything
  5. Locked in- because of functional fixedness you assume the one solution and do not attempt any other possibility, and you choose the first one you come

 Week 6

This week there will be no objectives or outline. This week will offer more opportunities to practice problem solving steps, and a quiz based on the objectives from the previous 5 weeks.
